Diabetes Education and Nutrition Services at Parrish Medical Center offers a comprehensive Diabetes Self-Management Education and Support program to patients with diabetes and their family members. The program is recognized by the American Diabetes Association (ADA) as meeting the National Standards for Diabetes Self-Management Education and Support. Our services are provided by certified diabetes educators – registered nurses and dietitians – as well as pharmacists and exercise specialists.
We offer different options to meet our patients’ needs. Generally, the first step is to complete the group class. Following group class completion, you meet one-on-one with a nurse and a dietitian. We also offer follow-up classes on problem solving, meal planning and making lifestyle changes, and a monthly support group. We provide individual instruction for patients on starting insulin or other injected medications. Patients are encouraged to bring a family or support person with them to the group class and individual appointments.
Instruction is provided to people of all ages – from children to adults – with Type 1 diabetes, Type 2 diabetes or gestational diabetes. We also see people with prediabetes.
Whether you are newly diagnosed or need assistance getting your diabetes back on track, this program is for you. Our goal is to provide you with the knowledge and skills you need to live a healthy life with diabetes.
Diabetes Education and Nutrition Services also provides Nutrition Counseling (also called Medical Nutrition Therapy or MNT) for medical conditions where a change in food habits is advised for better management of the condition. Counseling is available for, but not limited to, the following conditions:
- Gastrointestinal disorders
- Eating problems
- Heart disease
- High blood pressure
- Home tube feeding
- Kidney disease
- Weight management
The goal of nutrition services is to promote health and well-being, reduce the risk for disease, prevent complications of chronic diseases, such as diabetes, and promote successful behavior change.
Individual patients are seen by appointment on Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday between 8:30 a.m. and 5 p.m. in the North Building of Parrish Medical Center.
