Walgreens and PMC Now Offering New Bedside Medication Delivery Service

Parrish Medical Center (PMC) is working with Walgreens at 2475 No. U.S. 1 in Mims to provide patients who are preparing to go home from a hospital stay with a convenient, bedside medication delivery option.

Medication is often prescribed to help patients heal and recuperate at home. This new service makes it easy and convenient for patients to have prescriptions filled and delivered directly to them before leaving the hospital and eliminates the need for that extra stop on the way home.

As part of this new service, Walgreens provides a full-time pharmacy technician who is dedicated to PMC. The pharmacy technician visits with a patient during their hospital stay and asks if they would like prescriptions filled and delivered to them before leaving the hospital. If they do, the patient fills out a request form with their physician’s medication orders. Walgreens handles any necessary insurance authorizations and fills and delivers the order directly to the patient.

“We want to help ease the transition from hospital to home, and this new program does that,” said Walgreens Market Vice President Marlin Hutchens. “Every day, we offer convenience and accessibility to the communities we serve. This bedside medication delivery service takes that care to another level. For those who do not live near PMC, patients can always refill their medication at any Walgreens location.”

“Providing healing patient experiences is our mission and our work with Walgreens to provide this patient bedside prescription delivery option helps us further fulfill that mission,” said Edwin Loftin, vice president, nursing, Parrish Medical Center.

Studies have shown that 50 percent of patients across the country do not get their prescriptions filled once discharged from the hospital. Delays in taking prescribed medicines or missing a dose can result in slowed recovery or even a trip back to the hospital. This program helps ensure the patient has the medication needed to stay on the road to recovery once leaving the hospital.

“Together with Walgreens, we are improving patient safety, recovery and satisfaction,” said Loftin.

Patient benefits include:
  • Simple request system
  • Free patient hotline for medication consultation with the pharmacist
  • Fast, bedside delivery of physician-ordered prescriptions
  • Time-saving option that makes transition from hospital to home easier
  • Improves compliance to take prescribed medicines for improved recovery
