Intro / Joint Replacement Care Plan
Your Joint Replacement Care Plan
Following is your guide to how the Parrish Orthopedic Center program works:
  1. Doctor's Evaluation
Your orthopedic surgeon will talk with you about your symptoms, medical history and recommended course of treatment.

  2. Home Safety Evaluation
A physical therapist will visit your home to make sure it is safe and easy for you to get around following surgery. Your therapist will let you know about potential risks and give you suggestions for making your home a great place to recover.

  3. Pre-Surgery Classes

  4. Surgery
Your surgery will be performed at Parrish Medical Center, one of America's finest healing environments®. Expect to spend three to four days in the hospital following surgery. Your orthopedic care team will prepare you for your procedure, assist the physician in the pre-operative areasand provide specialized care following your surgery.

  5. In-Hospital Therapy
The day after your surgery, physical therapists will begin a program with you to help you gain mobility and independence and pain management specialists will be available as needed.
Your in-hospital physical therapy includes gentle exercises to help you to get out of bed and into a chair. This therapy will also allow you to start walking short distances with a walker. Protecting your new joint is very important, so the therapist will tell you about any precautions or restrictions you may have during this initial mobility training.
Your goals during your hospital stay are:

    • Getting safely in and out of bed without assistance.

    • Getting safely in and out of a chair without assistance.

    • Knowing your precautions to protect your new joint after you leave the hospital.

    • Performing your exercises, as instructed, to increase strength and independence.

  6. Going Home
You and your doctor will decide if you will be able to return home directly after surgery or if you would benefit from the care of a skilled rehabilitation facility before you return home. If you are going directly home, your case manager can help you get home nursing care and provide a list of additional resources available to meet your needs. If you require home care, your home care team will help ensure a safe transition home and continue with/advance your rehabilitation program.

  7. Your home care team will help your family make your home setting comfortable and answer any questions you have. If you choose to stay in a skilled rehabilitation facility, your home care case manager will help you make that transition as well.
