Once your baby is born, you will be moved to an attractive, spacious room that is equipped with color televisions, telephones and private restrooms. When possible, patients are given private rooms. In addition, reclining chairs are provided in all post partum rooms. After all, new dads need rest too!
A Helping Hand
The nurses on the maternity unit are flexible and helpful, and will ensure that mothers and babies are as comfortable as possible. During the hospital stay, the nursing staff will provide individual instruction on baby care as needed.
The nurses are also very supportive with breastfeeding, and the staff includes certified lactation consultants who can assist with special situations. Videos and other instruction material is available for parents to use at any time.
In addition, the pediatrician will visit your baby every day and assess his or her progress.
Nursery
Our maternity nurses understand the importance of the parent-infant bonding experience. Rooming-in gives the option of keeping the baby in your room for a few hours a day to a total of 24 hours. Mothers have the option of returning the baby to the nursery at any time.
Hepatitis B Vaccine and PKU Testing
- Hepatitis B
Hepatitis B is an inflammation of the liver caused by the Hepatitis B Virus. The virus can be transmitted at birth from a mother to a baby. Parrish Medical Center's pediatricians, in compliance with the State of Florida, offers the Hepatitis B vaccine in their offices. The Hepatitis B vaccine is safe and effective.
- PKU Testing
The purpose of PKU testing of babies is to detect an enzyme deficiency that can be corrected by diet. This is a state-mandated blood test required at two and fourteen days of age. The first test will be done in the hospital, and the second at your pediatrician's office.
