Why is The Health Village at Main Street PMC needed?

Older adults are impacted more severely by illness and disease. Older adults, especially with multi-system healthcare issues, require at least five times the healthcare services of adults younger than 65, even with today's medical resources. Aging is a fact of life and affects everyone. We have heard from many of you about the daily challenges faced trying to find specialized care and resources for older adults. We've heard many individual experiences that reveal a need for a service that addresses multiple medical issues facing our senior population, such as memory loss, continence, medications and transportation. Statistics show that by 2030 the number of elderly in our state is expected increase by about 124%, which equals 6.3 million age 65 or older. In fact, studies show that Brevard will out pace the state in the number of people age 65 or older by 2030. The need is real.

Providing credible, loving aging services for our parents, friends, neighbors and other loved ones is good for the entire community. That's why Parrish Medical Center and the Jess Parrish Medical Foundation together with the generosity of Brevard citizens are committed to establishing exceptional health and medical services for aging adults through The Health Village at Main Street PMC.

What are the goals of The Health Village at Main Street PMC?

The goals of The Health Village at Main Street PMC are to:

  1. Develop and promote a quality, culturally sensitive, interdisciplinary aging and senior care program within a loving, healing environment where we help people age with grace, poise and confidence.

  2. Serve as a resource/a partner to community physicians.

  3. Improve the quality of life of older adults by addressing their unique health care needs with dignity and respect.

  4. Provide health education and information especially for the elderly, their families and other caregivers.

What is the vision for The Health Village?

Our vision at Parrish Medical Center is: "Healing experiences for everyone all the time." Main Street PMC is one example of how we are realizing that vision.

Through Main Street PMC, Parrish Medical Center hopes to make the experience seniors have in receiving the care they need loving, caring, efficient, and effective. It is a place where seniors and their families will feel confident that their health concerns are addressed and that their wishes are respected when decisions are made.

Main Street PMC is an exciting and unique idea just isn't found anywhere else in America. Together we will help the seniors in our community age with grace, poise and confidence.

"If we neglect our older adult, we neglect the past. If we neglect the past, we have no future" (Anonymous).

What is a Geriatrician?

A Geriatrician is a physician who is specially trained to prevent and manage the unique and, oftentimes, multiple health concerns of older adults. Generally, geriatricians are board-certified in either Family Practice or Internal Medicine and have also acquired additional training to become board-certified in Geriatric Medicine.

Geriatricians treat and manage multiple disease symptoms, and developcare plans that address the special health care needs of older adults. Geriatricians are attuned to how functional status (the ability to perform basic activities like eating, dressing walking, shopping, and cooking) dramatically influences a person's overall quality of life and independence. Geriatricians work closely with patients' families to provide the best possible quality of life for each individual.
