Nuclear Medicine (Diagnostic and Therapeutic)
Diagnostic Nuclear Medicine, the physiologic study of organ systems uses a radioactive element that is tagged to a specific compound. It is administered to the patient by injection or ingestion. Once the element concentrates in the target organ, the size, shape, location and function of that organ-be it the heart, bone, thyroid, kidney, liver, spleen, lungs or digestive tract-can be determined.
Therapeutic Nuclear Medicine is involved in the treatment of thyroid disease and various cancers. Radioactive seed implants for prostate cancer are provided in conjunction with the Perioperative Department. Recent developments in therapy include Zevalin for the treatment of non-Hodgkin's Lymphoma. Parrish Medical Center's Nuclear Medicine Department was the first to provide this treatment in Brevard County. Our radiologists and technologists have trained at Moffett Cancer Center in recent developments in cancer diagnosis and treatment.
Interventional Radiology is one of the specialty departments within Diagnostic Imaging. Our department offers many different services and performs numerous invasive procedures. In addition, we offer one-on-one patient education, follow-up care and advanced support as needed for patients during their examinations. Our staff consists of highly trained technologists who in addition are also fully cross-trained into the Cardiac Catheterization Lab. One full-time and one part-time department RN assists with procedures and patient care.
Licensed and highly credentialed registered technologists perform all imaging procedures. Board certified radiologists who are physicians that specialize in Diagnostic Imaging interpret all images. They act as consultants to the medical staff to diagnose your condition and to provide select interventions.
