Intro / Clinical Trials
The clinical research program at Parrish Medical Center was established in 2002. The program is credentialed for research by the H. Lee Moffitt Cancer Center and Research Institute and is a member of Moffitt's Community Clinical Oncology Program (CCOP). CCOP is funded by the National Cancer Institute to develop cancer control clinical trials in community-based healthcare facilities such as PMC. Past Trial Participation

Parrish Medical Center has previously participated in the National Surgical Adjuvant Breast and Bowel Project (NSABP) Protocol B-33. This study of Exemestane for postmenopausal breast cancer patients who have completed five years of Tamoxifen was closed in 2003 due to positive findings from another study looking at the drug Letrozole.

In 2003, PMC also participated in the international SYNERGY study, comprised of 10,000 patients in 12 countries with Acute Coronary Syndrome. The results of this study were presented at the American College of Cardiology annual convention in March 2004.

PMC, Space Coast Medical Associates and H. Lee Moffitt Cancer Center and Research Institute offer New Cancer Research Initiative

Parrish Medical Center, Space Coast Medical Associates and H. Lee Moffitt Cancer Center & Research Institute are collaborating on a new, exciting research project designed to study individual cancer tumors at the molecular level. It's part of Moffitt's Total Cancer Care research initiative that will eventually lead to personalized medicine for patients across the state.

Parrish Medical Center is one of the first sites in Florida chosen by Moffitt to participate in this research initiative. The high quality of PMC's cancer program, commitment to advancing cancer research and the expertise of its physicians and administrative leadership were all-important factors in the selection.

Total Cancer Care will provide PMC cancer patients with the opportunity to enroll in a clinical trial that is anticipated to help treat future cancer patients with greater accuracy. Patients who choose to participate will be asked to contribute their tumor tissue and clinical information for in-depth study and analysis.

Scientists and clinicians have long been challenged by the fact that some tumors will respond well to conventional treatments while others do not. Moffitt scientists will use new technology to analyze the tumor tissue at the molecular level. The information gathered will help explain these variances in response to treatment. The ultimate goal is to develop more personalized treatments for cancer based on the specific genetic makeup of the disease.

In 2005, the Commission on Cancer (CoC) of the American College of Surgeons granted comprehensive status to the cancer center at PMC. Only 25 percent of all hospitals in the United States and Puerto Rico are approved by the CoC and of those even fewer are granted "comprehensive" status.
