Lactation Consultant Services

PMC Women's Services is pleased to support your decision to breastfeed. Our lactation consultant is an experienced nurse who has been internationally board certified as a lactation specialist. Along with our experienced and supportive nursing staff, she will teach you breastfeeding basics, one-on-one help with positioning, and also provide the support you need for successful breastfeeding. After going home, your lactation consultant continues to be a resource for you and your baby. Please call 321-268-6682 for more information.

What Is Postpartum Depression?

It’s common for new moms to feel emotional and even sad from time to time. But if you don’t feel better in about a week, it might be more than just the “baby blues.” It could be postpartum depression, which is a common complication of childbirth.

If you’re experiencing postpartum depression, you probably feel anxious, fatigued and restless. Experts believe postpartum depression may be caused by changes in hormone levels during and after pregnancy.

If you’ve recently given birth and aren’t feeling like yourself, talk to your obstetrician right away. By getting the help you need soon, you can return to enjoying your life and your baby.

Treatment Options for Postpartum Depression

Various treatment options are available for women suffering from postpartum depression.

  • Counseling/therapy. A mental health professional can help you better understand your feelings and how to cope with them and solve problems.
  • Medications. Antidepressants are a common treatment for postpartum depression. Some medications can be taken while a mom is breast-feeding; however, others should not.
  • Hormone therapy. Estrogen replacement therapy may help counter the estrogen drop that comes with childbirth. While research on hormone therapy’s effectiveness is limited, for some women it may help.
