Diabetes and Its Effect on Heart

Health Diabetes is a condition that refers to high blood glucose (sugar) levels. It results from the body’s inability to produce and/or use insulin, a hormone that helps the body use glucose for energy.

People with diabetes have a higher risk of having a heart attack or stroke than those who do not have diabetes. In fact, heart disease and stroke are the leading causes of death and disability among people with type 2 diabetes, and the American Heart Association lists diabetes as one of the top six controllable risk factors for cardiovascular disease.

The good news is that diabetes is treatable. However, it’s important to realize that even when blood sugar levels are under control, there is still some increased risk of heart disease and stroke. The reason? People with diabetes typically have other heart disease risk factors—such as high blood pressure, high cholesterol, obesity, smoking and physical inactivity—which contribute to their heart disease risk. By working with their endocrinologist and controlling their diabetes and other risk factors, people with diabetes can reduce their overall risk.  

Treatment Options for Diabetes

Diabetes treatment begins the daily choices. Lifestyle changes are important in helping to control and reduce the progression of diabetes. These include:

  • Losing weight
  • Being physically active
  • Eating a healthy diet
  • Quitting smoking  

These healthy behaviors are also essential in reducing other heart disease risk factors.

If lifestyle changes aren’t enough, diabetes treatment may include medications to control blood glucose levels.
