Living Healthy Workshop at Parrish Medical Center

Learn to better deal with your chronic condition to live a healthier life.

Parrish Medical Center is bringing a new health-education program to the community. Living Healthy, a Chronic Disease Self-Management Program (CDSMP), is based on a proven model developed by the Stanford University Patient Education Research Center that is used worldwide to improve health and reduce hospitalizations. In fact, the Centers for Disease Control (CDC) and the Administration on Aging have adopted the CDSMP model as an effective, evidence-based program.

Living Healthy is a six-week workshop currently offered at no cost. Parrish Medical Center’s first workshop begins Wednesday, August 11 from 9:30 a.m. to noon, and will continue each Wednesday through September 15. The workshops will be held initially at Parrish Medical Center, 951 N. Washington Ave., Titusville, and its satellite locations. However, they will soon be offered throughout the community at churches, senior centers, assisted living facilities and community centers.

Participants will learn strategies and gain confidence in their ability to manage their own health. The workshops are led by two trained leaders, one or both of whom are non-healthcare professionals who themselves have a chronic disease. Subjects covered will include:
  1. Techniques to deal with problems such as frustration, fatigue, pain and isolation
  2. Appropriate exercise for maintaining and improving strength, flexibility, and endurance
  3. Appropriate use of medications
  4. Communicating effectively with family, friends, and health professionals
  5. Nutrition, and problem solving and creating personal action plans.
In the U.S., 80 percent of seniors live with at least one chronic condition and 50 percent have two or more chronic health conditions such as diabetes, heart failure, asthma, arthritis, chronic obstructive pulmonary disease, etc. This program helps people who suffer from chronic diseases to lead healthier lives. “We have chosen to bring this evidence-based Living Healthy program to our community because we have a higher population of seniors across Brevard County and in Florida. We want to empower people to be active managers of their health and ultimately improve their quality of life,” says Lori Duester, manager of Parrish Health Village program development.
