Tai Chi Flash Mob Planned

A Tai Chi flash mob is planned to captivate and astound members and guests of Parrish Health & Fitness Center at 9 a.m. both Monday and Tuesday, September 17 and 18. Unbeknownst to most of the members participants will begin the demonstration at the east end of the main hallway. As they make their way to the center’s front door they will slowly move through the first eight Tai Chi forms.

The wellness-based center, located at 2210 Cheney Highway, Titusville, hopes to promote this alternative form of exercise in recognition of National Falls Prevention Awareness Day, which will be observed on September 22. National Falls Prevention Awareness Day is observed the first day of Fall to promote and increase public awareness about how to prevent and reduce falls among older adults.

Why Tai Chi?
This gentle form of physical activity is ideal for our aging population, who are at the greatest risk for fatal and nonfatal injuries due to falls. Tai Chi improves movement sense, postural control, balance, walking ability and coordination; and it enhances ones ability to participate in functional tasks such as reaching and sitting. Overall, the practice of Tai Chi reduces the fear of falling and incidence of falls.

Nearly 18 percent of Florida residents are 65 years of age or older. Falls are the leading cause of fatal and nonfatal injuries among Florida’s senior population and result in significant physical, personal, social and economic burden.   Parrish Health & Fitness Center holds six weekly Tai Chi classes, ranging from beginner to advanced level. In agreement with the National Council on Aging, the center aims to promote and increase public awareness about how to prevent and reduce falls among older adults.
