New Mobile Device Technology To Engage, Educate And Empower Patients

Parrish Medical Center (PMC) patients are among the first in the country to participate in interactive multimedia programs on their smartphones or tablets to become better informed and take more active roles in their health care. The patient-controlled programs created by Emmi Solutions combine graphics, text and spoken words to help patients make sense of vital health information. Topics include how to prepare for a specific upcoming procedure, what to expect during a hospital stay, and how to effectively manage a chronic condition.

“We are committed to reaching beyond our own walls to give our patients the tools they need to be active participants in their own care,” said Edwin Loftin, VP of Nursing for Parrish Medical Center.” This new mobile technology allows us to reach patients on their own terms, at the moment they’re ready to learn, and in the way they prefer.”

PMC has offered these Emmi® programs for patients to view on a computer for four years, but they have just recently been made available for viewing on a mobile device as well. Forty-one percent of patients would prefer to have more of their care delivered via their mobile device, according to a Pew Research Center (PwC) study. And nearly half of American adults now own smartphones, making them more popular than basic mobile phones, according to a survey recently released by the PwC. Mobile platforms also allow providers to engage hard-to-reach patients, especially underserved populations and young people, for whom mobile devices are often their only access to the Internet.

This innovative technology delivers information to patients at key moments—at home, in the community, during ambulatory visits, or in the hospital—when they are most likely to understand, retain and act upon the information. Its platform also allows PMC to track and measure the clinical and financial impact of patient engagement. It has been demonstrated in previous studies to help healthcare providers reduce costs, increase revenue, and improve outcomes by engaging and empowering patients.

“EMMI patient education programs are engaging, effective and now more convenient for our patients on mobile devices,” added Loftin. “EMMI programs empower patients to better self manage their health care and to make more informed decisions. EMMI has had a positive impact on our patient satisfaction, resulted in improved outcomes, and has become a valued tool within our caregiver toolkits.

Providers prescribe the programs to patients via a unique access code and link to a select program. Patients then go online and participate in the program within a secure browser. Most programs are about 20 minutes and patients can watch at their own pace, or start viewing it on one device and finish viewing it on another. Programs can also be shared with family and friends. To view the program on a mobile device, patients do not need to download an app. To view a sample program, go to parrishmed.com/emmi.
