Making The Grade

Parrish Medical Center has earned more national awards than any other hospital in Central Florida

Discerning healthcare consumers consistently state the three most important things in choosing where to receive healthcare are quality, technology and service. In Central Florida there is one hospital that is exceeding every expectation.

Quality Counts

Parrish Medical Center (PMC) in Titusville has earned more national awards and distinctions for quality and service than any other hospital in Central Florida. While most hospitals tout earning just one disease-specific Gold Seal of Approval™ from The Joint Commission, PMC has earned seven in the areas of acute coronary syndrome, breast cancer care, diabetes management, heart failure care, palliative (comfort) care, primary stroke care, and wound healing. In fact, of the more than 5,000 hospitals nationwide, only six others have earned as many as Parrish Medical Center.

PMC also is achieving exceptional results in treating heart attacks. We’ve all heard the term “time is muscle” when it comes to treating heart attacks. Most American hospitals strive to achieve the national best practice of a 90-minute time to treatment. PMC averages 57 minutes—more than 30 minutes faster than best practices. Other quality-related distinctions earned by PMC include:

  • Premier Status designation for excellence in women’s health from the Spirit of Women Network, in cooperation with the Office of Women’s Health and Department of Health and Human Services.
  • HeartCaring® designation for excellence in gender-sensitive cardiovascular care from the Spirit of Women Network, in collaboration with the National Heart, Lung, and Blood Institute and Peripheral Arterial Disease Coalition.
  • Commission on Cancer accreditation as a comprehensive community cancer program.

Service is Paramount

Earning such designations and accreditations are part of the medical center’s overall goal to be ranked in the top 10 percent of hospitals nationwide in the areas for service and quality. It is also a result of PMC’s success in applying national performance indicators, called core measures, with its ability to blend evidence-based medicine with proven management techniques such as Lean Six Sigma, and its trademark healing environment.

Tops in Technology

Complementing the hospital’s quality initiatives is technology. From its sophisticated surgical suites equipped with some of the newest technology available anywhere, to the all-digital diagnostic centers, PMC has it all. In fact, few hospitals have the level of technology found in Parrish Medical Center’s catheterization, orthopedic and neurosurgery surgical suites.

Also, PMC has a large network of technologically advanced diagnostic centers. This network includes American College of Radiology accredited, all-digital diagnostic centers conveniently located throughout North Brevard: PMC main campus, Parrish Heart & Health Village and Parrish Healthcare Center at Port St. John (the state’s first Silver LEED-certified “green” outpatient diagnostic center).

With digital diagnostic technology, doctors are able to see results immediately without having to wait for film to be developed. The images are superior and crystal clear, allowing for more-accurate and faster diagnoses. And the images also can be shared electronically among doctors and the hospital, which results in enhanced patient and physician experiences.

Healing Patient Experience

Quality and technology must exist in balance with service. PMC has achieved that balance. PMC’s mission is “healing experiences for everyone all the time.” Such an intrinsic commitment to service and healing patient experiences isn’t surprising given that PMC is recognized as a pioneer in healing environments among America’s hospitals. That pioneering spirit led it to become the first hospital to be voted America’s No. 1 healing hospital by the Baptist Healing Trust, a Nashville-based foundation specializing in healing hospital transformation.

PMC retained the distinction for three years in a row until it voluntarily retired itself from the running in 2008. Today, Parrish Medical Center serves on the Baptist Healing Trust’s healing hospital award selection committee and mentors other hospitals around the country in their quests to become healing hospitals.

In addition to the healing hospital designation, PMC also is among the top-ranked hospitals according to the new mandatory national Hospital Consumer Assessment of Healthcare Providers and Systems (HCAHPS) survey. The intent of the HCAHPS initiative is to provide a standardized survey instrument and data collection methodology for measuring patients’ perspectives on hospital care. Prior to HCAHPS there was no national standard for collecting or publicly reporting patients’ perspectives of care information that would enable valid comparisons to be made across all hospitals. PMC consistently earns some of the highest rankings across the board—not just in one or two of the 10 categories measured.

Other service distinctions earned by PMC include:

  • 2009-10 HealthGrades Outstanding Patient Experience Award for placing in the top 10 percent of all hospitals in the nation for quality and service.
  • The 2009-10 Hospital of Choice Award from the American Alliance of Healthcare Providers.
  • ADVANCE for Nurses news magazine Reader’s Choice “top hospitals” award winner.
  • Modern Healthcare Magazine’s Spirit of Excellence Award for Service.
  • Center for Health Design and Starizon Discovery Award for Service Excellence.
