Spirit of Philanthropy Winner Receives National Award

Sara Ann Conkling of Cocoa won the National Spirit of Women Community Hero in Action Award. The National Spirit of Women Awards recognize and appreciate women throughout the United States who dedicate themselves to making their communities, both large and small, a better place for everyone. She received her award at the National Spirit of Women Conference awards dinner in Boca Raton in early July.

Conkling was one of three women chosen to receive the Community Hero Award for outstanding woman of philanthropy from the Jess Parrish Medical Foundation at its Spirit of Philanthropy award presentation in May at Parrish Medical Center (PMC) in Titusville. Winners from this event became nominees for the Spirit of Women National Awards.

Conkling currently sits on the board of the Friends of the Local Library; founded Brevard Ecumenical AIDS Ministry; and serves on the board and the auxiliary of Country Acres. She also serves on the Space Coast Area Transit board, helping to ensure transportation for disadvantaged citizens; serves as a member of the North Brevard Coalition of Human Services; and is the founder of the Brevard Transportation Advocacy Coalition.

Parrish Medical Center is Central Florida’s only Spirit of Women Network hospital and has earned the prestigious Spirit of Women Premier Hospital designation for excellence in women’s health. The designation is awarded only to hospitals that meet and/or exceed national women’s health standards of excellence, as defined by the Office of Women’s Health and Department of Health and Human Service (DHHS). As part of a comprehensive evaluation process, PMC demonstrated innovation and excellence in women’s programming across the board and earned the designation as a Premier Hospital by meeting 100 percent of the standards and earning an overall perfect score. The National Standards of Excellence in Women’s Health require focus on women-centered care, call-to-action education, and access to care in seven different areas.
